Is Jarabacoa Safe?
My Personal Experience Living in the Dominican Republic
One of the most common questions people ask before moving to the Dominican Republic is: “Is it safe?”
After living more than 40 years in Santo Domingo and traveling extensively throughout the country for both business and personal reasons, I can honestly say that Jarabacoa is, in my opinion, one of the safest places to live in the Dominican Republic.
My name is Florentino, and after experiencing life in many different cities and regions across the country, the difference I felt when spending time in Jarabacoa was immediate.
The first thing you notice is that Jarabacoa is still a relatively small mountain town. Unlike large cities where people live fast-paced and often disconnected from one another, Jarabacoa has maintained a much more traditional and community-oriented lifestyle.
Over time, many residents know each other personally, especially families that have lived here for generations. This creates a stronger sense of community, familiarity, and respect among people.
Another major difference is the overall lifestyle. Jarabacoa is not a large urban city filled with heavy traffic, overcrowded neighborhoods, and the stress commonly associated with metropolitan environments.
Life here moves slower.
People spend more time outdoors, with family, and connected to nature. The mountain environment naturally creates a calmer atmosphere compared to large cities.
One of the things that surprised me most after moving here was how comfortable it feels to walk around town during the day or even at night. In many areas of Jarabacoa, people regularly walk, exercise, visit restaurants, or spend time outdoors without constantly feeling worried about crime or insecurity.
Of course, like anywhere in the world, common sense and basic precautions are always important. But compared to larger cities in the Dominican Republic, the overall feeling of safety and peace in Jarabacoa is significantly different.
Another important factor is the personality of the people.
In my experience, people in Jarabacoa and the surrounding countryside areas are generally more friendly, approachable, and willing to help others without expecting something in return. There is still a strong culture of respect, hospitality, and simplicity that has not disappeared despite the town’s growth and development.
The mentality of many people here is simple:
work hard, live peacefully, take care of family, and avoid causing harm to others.
This atmosphere is one of the main reasons why so many Dominicans from Santo Domingo, Santiago, and other major cities are now relocating to Jarabacoa permanently or purchasing second homes here.
At the same time, Jarabacoa continues to grow and modernize. The town now has major supermarkets like:
Supermercados Nacional
La Sirena
New residential communities, tourism projects, restaurants, and commercial developments continue expanding every year, while the town still maintains its peaceful mountain-town identity.
For many people, this balance between safety, nature, modern conveniences, and quality of life is what makes Jarabacoa one of the most attractive places to live or retire in the Dominican Republic today.
My name is Florentino, and if you are considering moving, retiring, or investing in Jarabacoa, I would be happy to guide you based on my personal experience living here with my family.
